In a highly unusual confirmation hearing, six nominees from one federal court district—Arizona—prepare to testify, during a recent session of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The six vacancies account for half of the District of Arizona’s 12 permanent judgeships, and all have been designated as “judicial emergencies.” From left are: U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven Logan, Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney John Tuchi, former U.S. Attorney Diane Humetewa, lawyer Rosemary Marquez, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Douglas Rayes, and Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge James Soto.
